How the WPI Operator Certification Exams Work — and How to Prepare
The standardized operator exams built by Water Professionals International (WPI, formerly ABC) follow the same design across water treatment, wastewater treatment, distribution, and collection. This page explains the format, the scoring, and the study method the exams are designed around — taken from WPI's own 2025 Need-to-Know Criteria, the official blueprints for each exam.
The format
- 100 scored questions, all multiple choice with four options. Your exam may also include up to 10 extra unscored "pre-test" questions mixed in — WPI uses them to validate items for future exams, and they do not count toward your score.
- 70% is the passing standard on the scored questions in the programs that use these standardized exams.
- A Formula/Conversion Table is provided with the exam — the same table WPI publishes. Calculation questions are written to be solved with it.
- Eligibility and scheduling run through your certifying authority (usually your state board). Experience and education requirements vary by state and class — your board's rules decide who may sit the exam.
Two kinds of questions: Recall and Application
Every item is written at one of two cognitive levels in the Need-to-Know blueprint. Recall items test whether you know a fact, term, or procedure. Application items hand you an operating situation — data, symptoms, a trend — and ask you to evaluate it and choose the adjustment. The mix shifts by exam: the Wastewater Collection Class I exam is about 80% Recall, while the Class II treatment exams are roughly two-thirds to 70% Application. That is why Class II candidates need scenario practice, not just definitions.
What each exam covers
Each exam's blueprint weights its content areas differently. Calculation items run about 10% of most exams (12% on Wastewater Treatment Class II):
- Water Treatment Class I — Treatment Process is the largest area (about 31%), then Equipment Operation & Maintenance, Laboratory, Source Water, and Security/Safety/Administration; about 10% calculations. Bank details · Free sample
- Water Treatment Class II — heavier on Treatment Process Evaluation and adjustment; about 10% calculations. Bank details · Free sample
- Wastewater Treatment Class I — Equipment and Treatment Process dominate; about 10% calculations. Bank details · Free sample
- Wastewater Treatment Class II — 40% Treatment Process Evaluation and Adjustment; 12% calculations; 70% Application items. Bank details
- Water Distribution Class I — System Components and Equipment are over 60% of the exam; about 9–10% calculations. Bank details · Free sample
- Wastewater Collection Class I — Equipment and Collection System O&M together are about 54%; 80% Recall. Bank details · Free sample
How to prepare (the method the blueprint rewards)
- Start from the Need-to-Know Criteria for your exam. It lists every task the exam can test, area by area. WPI publishes the current criteria free at gowpi.org — if a task is not in the document, it is not on your exam.
- Study from the approved references. Each exam's reference list names the sources its questions are validated against — for wastewater, the California State University Sacramento (CSUS) manuals and WEF publications; for drinking water, AWWA and CSUS titles among them. TradeQBank's sources are listed per bank on our method page.
- Practice the calculations with the formula table open. About one question in ten is a calculation, and all of them use the provided Formula/Conversion Table. Speed comes from knowing which formula a situation calls for, not from memorizing it.
- Take timed practice in blueprint proportions. Knowing the material is not the same as finishing 100 questions under time pressure with the areas weighted the way the real exam weights them.
- Check whether your state actually uses the standardized exam. Many do; some run their own. Our state-by-state guide covers the states we have verified against official sources.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the WPI operator exams?
100 scored multiple-choice questions, plus up to 10 unscored pre-test questions that do not affect your result.
What score do I need to pass?
The passing standard is 70% of the scored questions in the programs that use these standardized exams. Your certifying authority confirms the standard for your jurisdiction.
Can I use a formula sheet on the exam?
Yes — a Formula/Conversion Table is administered with the exam. Calculation questions are written to be solved with that table.
What is the difference between Recall and Application questions?
Recall questions test knowledge of facts and procedures. Application questions present an operating situation and ask you to evaluate it and choose the right adjustment. Class II exams weight Application much more heavily.
Who decides if I am eligible to take the exam?
Your certifying authority — usually your state board. Eligibility (experience, education, holding the lower class) varies by state and class; WPI's Need-to-Know documents direct candidates to their certifying authority for jurisdiction-specific rules.
