Iowa operator practice tests

Iowa DNR runs its operator certification on the standardized ABC exams: DNR calls them standardized certification exams, routes every candidate through PSI's ABC portal, and its official candidate bulletin puts the ABC Formula Table inside the testing software. Grade 1 is the entry grade that matches TradeQBank's Class I banks. Start with a free 25-question sample.

Iowa operator certification at a glance

  • Agency: Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Operator Certification Program (rules at 567 IAC chapter 81).
  • Exam: the ABC standardized exam for your grade, delivered by PSI at test centers, DNR field offices, and community college labs. The standardized ABC format is 100 scored questions with a 70% pass mark.
  • Entry grade: Grade 1, for water treatment, water distribution, and wastewater treatment (grades run 1–4).
  • Two Iowa-only tracks: Grade A sits below Grade 1 — a combined treatment + distribution certificate for the least complex systems — and wastewater Lagoon is a Grades 1–2 specialty. Neither is a standard ABC Class I exam; see the note below.

Iowa's Grade A certificate — a combined water treatment and distribution credential for the least complex systems, sitting below Grade 1 — has no ABC Class equivalent, and TradeQBank's banks are built for the Grade 1 exams, not Grade A. The same applies to the wastewater Lagoon specialty certificate (Grades 1–2). If you are sitting a Grade 1 exam, the Class I banks match your blueprint.

Practice tests for other states

TradeQBank publishes a state page only where the state's own board confirms it uses the standardized WPI exams our banks are built to. Verified so far:

State facts checked October 26, 2026 against Iowa DNR's operator certification pages (iowadnr.gov), the official Iowa DNR candidate bulletin hosted on PSI's ABC portal, and 567 IAC chapter 81. Source: Iowa DNR — Operator Certification. If your state isn't listed, the banks still rehearse the national WPI Class I blueprints — but check your board's exam provider before relying on that.

FAQ

Common questions

Does Iowa use the ABC standardized operator exams?

Yes. Iowa DNR describes its certification exams as standardized, delivers them through PSI's ABC portal (abc-ia), and its official candidate bulletin states that the ABC Formula Table is available within the testing software — the exams are ABC's standardized exams, administered by PSI.

What grade does a new Iowa operator start at?

Grade 1, in water treatment, water distribution, and wastewater treatment. Below Grade 1 sits Grade A, a combined treatment-and-distribution certificate for the least complex systems, which is an Iowa-specific credential rather than an ABC exam.

Where do I take the Iowa operator exam?

Exams are scheduled through PSI and delivered at test centers, Iowa DNR field offices, and community college labs. You apply through Iowa DNR's Operator Certification Program.

Is TradeQBank part of Iowa DNR or WPI?

No. TradeQBank is independent practice material built to the same published Need-to-Know blueprints. Certification decisions are made only by Iowa DNR.
