Oregon operator practice tests

Oregon uses the standardized ABC/WPI exams for drinking water and wastewater operators: OHA names ABC as its certification exam provider and DEQ states outright that it offers the national ABC standardized examinations. Level 1 (drinking water) and Grade I (wastewater) are the entry grades that match TradeQBank's Class I banks. Start with a free 25-question sample.

Oregon operator certification at a glance

  • Agencies: Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Drinking Water Services for water treatment and distribution; Oregon DEQ for wastewater treatment and collection.
  • Exam: the standardized ABC/WPI exam — DEQ states it verbatim: 100 scored multiple-choice questions, a 3-hour limit, and a passing score of 70. The ABC Formula/Conversion Table is provided at the exam site.
  • Where you test: computer-based, scheduled through PSI after the agency approves your application.
  • Entry grades: Level 1 for both drinking water treatment and distribution (levels run 1–4); Grade I for wastewater treatment (grades run I–IV).
  • One exception: OHA's Small Water System ("S") certification for very small systems uses OHA's own course exam, not the standardized exam — see the note below.

Two honest limits. Oregon's Small Water System ("S") certification — for systems with under 151 connections — is earned through OHA's own one-day course exam, not the standardized ABC exam, so TradeQBank's banks are not a match for that certificate. Oregon's wastewater collection exams are also ABC standardized exams, and TradeQBank's Wastewater Collection Class I bank covers the entry grade.

Practice tests for other states

TradeQBank publishes a state page only where the state's own board confirms it uses the standardized WPI exams our banks are built to. Verified so far:

State facts checked October 26, 2026 against the Oregon Health Authority's operator certification pages (oregon.gov/oha) and Oregon DEQ's wastewater operator certification FAQ and program pages (oregon.gov/deq). Source: OHA — Drinking Water Operator Certification. If your state isn't listed, the banks still rehearse the national WPI Class I blueprints — but check your board's exam provider before relying on that.

FAQ

Common questions

Does Oregon use the national standardized operator exams?

Yes. OHA names the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC, now WPI) as its certification exam provider and hosts the ABC Need-to-Know Criteria as its exam study material; DEQ states that it offers the national ABC standardized examinations for wastewater. Test questions are developed and validated by WPI and administered by PSI.

What grade does a new Oregon operator start at?

Level 1 for drinking water treatment and for distribution, and Grade I for wastewater treatment. Oregon's numbering matches the national convention, so Level 1 / Grade I correspond to WPI Class I.

How long is the Oregon exam, and what passes?

Oregon DEQ publishes the standardized format: 100 scored multiple-choice questions, a three-hour limit, and a passing score of 70. OHA likewise states a passing score of 70% or better for drinking water exams.

Is TradeQBank part of OHA, DEQ, or WPI?

No. TradeQBank is independent practice material built to the same published Need-to-Know blueprints. Certification decisions are made only by OHA and DEQ.
