Maine water operator practice tests
Maine's drinking water operator exams are ABC's standardized exams — the Maine CDC Drinking Water Program states it in so many words: 'Examinations for Water Operator licensure are offered by the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC). These standardized exams are nationally-based, multiple choice, validated, and reviewed.' That covers Maine's Treatment and Distribution licenses, and Maine's exams are not sequential — you may sit directly at the level you are applying for. This page covers drinking water only: Maine's wastewater exams are customized exams built with WPI, not the standardized ones, so our wastewater banks do not target them. This page covers drinking water only. Maine's wastewater operator exams (Biological Grades 1–5, Physical/Chemical Grades 1–2, and Spray Irrigation Grades 1–2, run by MEDEP with NEIWPCC-JETCC) are, in MEDEP's words, 'customized examinations in conjunction with Water Professionals International (WPI).' Customized is not standardized: TradeQBank's wastewater banks are built to the standardized WPI blueprints and do not target Maine's customized wastewater exams. The VSWS very-small-system drinking water exam is likewise a separate exam our banks do not target.

State facts checked October 26, 2026 against Maine CDC's Drinking Water Program pages (maine.gov/dhhs) and MEDEP's wastewater operator pages (maine.gov/dep). FAQ
Common questions
Does Maine use the ABC standardized operator exams?
For drinking water, yes. Maine CDC's Drinking Water Program states: 'Examinations for Water Operator licensure are offered by the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC). These standardized exams are nationally-based, multiple choice, validated, and reviewed.' That covers Maine's Treatment and Distribution licenses.
Do I have to start at the lowest Maine license level?
No. Maine's water operator exams are not sequential — candidates may sit directly at the desired level rather than working up grade by grade. Choose the practice bank that matches the level you plan to sit.
Does TradeQBank cover the Maine wastewater exams?
No — honestly. MEDEP states it 'uses customized examinations in conjunction with Water Professionals International (WPI)' for wastewater. Customized exams are built for Maine and differ from the standardized blueprints our wastewater banks rehearse, so we don't sell them as a Maine wastewater match.
Is TradeQBank part of Maine CDC or ABC/WPI?
No. TradeQBank is independent practice material built to the same published Need-to-Know blueprints. Licensing decisions are made only by the Maine Board of Water System Operators.
